COSEE Florida’s mission is to spark and nurture collaborations among Florida’s scientists and educators, to promote ocean discovery and literacy and to enhance the public’s understanding, appreciation and stewardship of the ocean.
The future of the ocean depends on greater awareness, which means making people aware of the importance of the ocean as part of our planetary life support system. COSEE Florida aims to advance ocean science literacy through the successful implementation of three interrelated statewide initiatives through the theme of Water as Habitat.
- Offer workshops, clinics and coaching with a focus on communications and educational outreach.
[Regional professional development workshops are designed to help scientists broaden the impact of their research through improved communication and effective educational outreach.]
- Introduce science education undergraduates at Florida State Colleges to ocean concepts and hands-on research.
[A novel ocean science based curriculum and research internship program developed by COSEE-FL scientists is aimed at improving the training and content knowledge of undergraduate students pursuing a B.S. degree in science education.]
- Sponsor “Water as Habitat Ocean Learning Network” events to better inform the public about Florida’s coastal and ocean waters and the scientists who study them.
[A state-wide network of scientists and educators has been established to support the development of quality education products, promote the establishment of local educational outreach programs, and facilitate regional collaborations that enhance ocean science education and increase ocean literacy.]
